System for radiotherapy treatment planning

Technology Communications Group (GTC) in conjunction with the company Técnicas Radiofísicas (TR) has been working in the research and development of recent radiotherapy techniques. Técnicas Radiofísicas has developed a Radiotherapy Planning System (PCRT3D), which is a versatile three-dimensional radiation system for cancer treatment. As a result of this collaboration, an Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) module is embedded into PCRT3D. This is a recent technique which provides better concentration of the radiation dose on tumors, producing more effective treatments against cancer.

This line of research in radiotherapy begins at 2001 inside GTC. The work is focused on the development of new methods for IMRT planning and administration, aiming at improving the efficiency of the system and reducing treatment times. In order to achieve this goal, a multidisciplinary approach is taken, comprising optimization, radiation modeling and signal and image processing techniques among others.

The results of the ongoing collaboration between GTC and Técnicas Radiofísicas have led to advances in scientific research as well as a real transfer to applications for the industrial sector. The PCRT3D system, with the embedded IMRT module, is currently being used for cancer treatment in different Clinics and hospitals in Spain (21), South America (6) and North America (1). There are so direct, clear and undoubted social benefits as a result of this collaboration which have led to a significant social impact.
