Conferencia: Novel Concepts in Urban Computing and their Application to Neuro-Science

El próximo lunes 2 de julio, organizada por el grupo COSMOS del I3A, tendrá lugar la conferencia Novel Concepts in Urban Computing and their Application to Neuro-Science, impartida por Ouri Wolfson (Department of Computer Science, University of Illinois at Chicago).

La charla será a las 16.30h en el Seminario del Dpto. de Informática e Ingeniería de Sistemas.


In the first part of the talk we introduce the concept of “fairness” in taxi ride sharing, which consists of finding the Nash equilibrium among passengers. We compare optimum and fair ridesharing theoretically and experimentally, and show that although theoretically the gap between fair and optimum is large, in practice it is very small.
Then we discuss the application of the optimum and equilibrium concepts to neuroscience. We analyze the travel of signals in the brain by a process called traffic assignment. The results are unexpected in the sense that such travel seems to follow some global optimization patterns as opposed to the equilibrium system favored by evolution.

Finally, we discuss how we apply other Urban Computing topics to neuroscience.

Bio: Ouri Wolfson, Ph.D., is the Richard and Loan Hill Professor of Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and an Affiliate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. He is the founder of Mobitrac, a venture-funded high-tech startup that was acquired in 2006, and of Pirouette Software. Wolfson authored over 220 publications, and holds seven patents. He is a Fellow of the ACM, AAAS, and IEEE, a University of Illinois Scholar, and a past ACM distinguished lecturer. He co-authored six award winning papers. Wolfson’s research is in big/mobile data.
